Milli Vanilli: The story of the biggest musical fraud ended with the bitter death of one of the protagonists.
The fans were crazy about them. Two handsome men with beautiful voices conquered the world at the turn of the 80s and 90s of the last century. But as it turned out, the boys couldn't sing that well.
Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus. Names that don't mean much even to die-hard music fans. But when Milli Vanilli is mentioned, most of us immediately think of two hotties singing sweet, but also dance songs, which at one time broke the hearts of many a girl.
The couple was brought together by manager Frank Farian, who was behind, among other things, the creation of Boney M. The tough businessman was not too confused about ethics and morals. The conditions for the singers were rather special - they had to look nice and they should also move well. Singing? That one is secondary. After all, many people can sing.
Thus, a Franco-German formation based purely on aesthetic expression was created. The singing for the young dancers was provided by a quartet of other artists, as well as musical accompaniment. Milli Vanilli's job was only to entertain and make money. That might be fine, but the music world lived under the belief that Fab and Rob were actually singing their lyrics.
Climbing to the top and falling hard
Milli Vanilli's music was successful and catchy, sales were growing, the popularity of the band was rising. Even so high that in 1990 they won the American Grammy Award as the discovery of the year. But a steep rise in fame was followed by a deep fall.
It didn't take long for the journalists to find out that the voices did not belong to the official faces of the band. A scandal broke out. The label pulled all of Milli Vanilli's records from sale, they had to hand over the Grammy Award and basically went into seclusion. For a while, the pair tried to create their own music under the name Rob&Fab, but were unsuccessful.
