There has been much international criticism of the Israeli airstrike on a refugee camp in Rafah, Gaza. At least forty people were killed on Sunday. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) had ordered Israel to stop the fighting in Rafah a few days earlier.The airstrike caused a fire in tents in the Tal as-Sultan refugee camp above Rafah, which Israel had designated as a safe zone.


News agency WAFA and the authorities in the Gaza Strip report at least forty deaths. According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA, many women and children were among the dead. Dozens of people have also been injured.


Images show that many tents are on fire. The bombings have caused synthetic tents to catch fire and people to be burned alive, writes UN Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese on X .

EU foreign chief Josep Borrell notes that both Israel and Hamas do not respect the recent ICJ ruling . He mentions that Israel continues the offensive in Rafah, while the city is packed with refugees and that Hamas recently shelled Tel Aviv.


The ICJ ordered Israel on Friday to immediately end the military offensive in Rafah and do more to protect Palestinian civilians. Hamas must immediately and unconditionally release the Israeli hostages, the court ruled.


The foreign ministers of the EU countries will discuss Monday in Brussels how they can ensure that both parties comply with the court's ruling, Borrell said upon arrival.No safe places in Rafah'

Spain, consistently one of the EU countries with the strongest criticism of Israel's actions, will ask the other member states for measures if Israel continues to ignore the court's ruling.


French President Emmanuel Macron reacts indignantly to the Israeli attack. "There are no safe places for Palestinian civilians in Rafah. I call for compliance with international law and an immediate ceasefire," he wrote on X.


Qatar warns that Israel's attack on the Rafah refugee camp could have negative consequences for ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. Qatar mediates in those negotiations.


Neighboring country and mediator Egypt speaks of a "deliberate bombardment". The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on Israel to comply with the ICJ ruling.
