day after Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones announced he'd been asked to not be on iHeart Radio in the near future, #FreeMattJones started trending on Twitter around the United States Thursday with almost 20,000 tweets.

It all started when The Republican Party of Kentucky filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission on Wednesday accusing Jones, a Democrat, of "serious violations" of regulations, including accepting corporate contributions toward his campaign and failing to report related expenditures. Jones has toyed for a while with the idea of launching a campaign for Senate next year against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell but hasn't announced a campaign. He called the complaint "frivolous" Wednesday afternoon, and by Wednesday night, announced he'd been asked to step down from his show.

For some, it was about supporting the Big Blue Nation and had nothing to do with a political blue or red.

One person wrote, "@senatemajldr you had me until now. Don't mess with what's important to so many of us who have supported you and kept politics and entertainment separate up to this tipping point."

Some just posted photos in Wildcat shirts or hats with the hashtag. Here are some of the top tweets from Thursday:  Also:KSR host Matt Jones to take break from iHeart Radio show after GOP complaint

"Due to the Mitch McConnell complaint filed this morning with the FEC against me, iHeart Radio has asked that I not be on the show in the upcoming days," Jones wrote on the Kentucky Sports Radio website, adding he didn't blame iHeart Radio.

"They have been very supportive in this entire process and wonderful to work for," he wrote.
