The whistleblower who leaked a video that appears to show British Olympian Charlotte Dujardin 'excessively' whipping a horse did so to 'save dressage'.

Dujardin, 39, is a six-time Olympic dressage medallist but withdrew from representing Team GB at the Paris Games on Tuesday after the video was released. In a statement, Dujardin admitted that she made an 'error of judgement' as she was filmed whipping a horse multiple times around its legs during a training session.

The 39-year-old has since been provisionally suspended by equestrian governing body FEI, which received the footage on Monday. Now the female whistleblower's lawyer, Stephan Wensing, has explained her reasoning for leaking the video.

It's not fun to ruin a career. She's not celebrating; she doesn't feel like a hero," Wensing told BBC Sport. "But she told me this morning this had to be done because she wants to save dressage."

Although Dujardin noted that the video was "filmed four years ago", Wensing said it was from two-and-a-half years ago. "When she [the whistleblower] filmed this and was aware of this two-and-a-half years ago, she was thinking everything this superstar, the best rider, is doing, must be okay. This must be the way to train horses and how to deal with it," Wensing continued.
